First detailed map of the region between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea
Guillelmo Delille’s “Map of the Countries Neighboring the Caspian Sea” is the first detailed map of the region between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea.
A significant role in developing this map was played by the Georgian diplomat, traveler, and writer—Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani.
Guillelmo Delille acknowledged Sulkhan-Saba’s significant contribution to creation of the map by personally depicting his name on the map and mentioning it in the map’s legend as Sofkam Sabas, Prince de Geoorgie (Sulkhan-Saba, Prince of Georgia).
The map depicts all the kingdoms, principalities, and regions of Georgia, along with numerous geographical features—cities, villages, rivers, lakes, mountains, fortresses, churches and monasteries, roads, and more.
